Across the country and throughout our great state, classrooms are transforming in an effort to engage students in meaningful learning. Teachers are revamping their teaching styles and lessons to reach students in a way that is fun and memorable. As a secondary social studies teacher, I had to become extra creative in order to find ways to make learning historical content and skills fun and exciting. I knew lectures and workbooks would keep the learner in a sedated state. So how could I bring learning to life and get students to learn without even realizing it? In this blog, I will share out my speed dating activity and how I used in my 11th grade social studies classroom. Speed Dating The great thing about this activity is that it allows your students to explore a large amount of content in a 45 or minute class period and can be used in any subject area. Students work individually, in pairs, and then collaboratively. Initially, I thought I was a genius but after researching, I realized it was not some new, unheard of idea. I introduced this activity in my Progressive Era unit.

Transformations of Functions Speed Dating I know I am going to take some grief for this statement, but I have learned it to be the truth. There are some things that, once discovered, you simply need to memorize — and practice. This is about mental and often physical motor skills. Becoming fluent at some things requires more or less practice for different people, but for most of us, it does require something.

Just some things this high school math teacher thinks about Friday, January 28, Trial Run: I spent the week on rational expressions and complex fractions, so I wanted to review all of that. I won’t go into all the details, because I pretty much followed the activity exactly as Kate describes it. So here’s my reflection. What I liked about speed dating: At any given moment, all the students were doing math well, almost. And they weren’t just watching someone do math, they were actively participating by either doing a problem or helping someone else do a problem.
I love empowering the students to coach each other. What I didn’t like: I must admit, the noise level was a little out of my comfort zone. But I am trying to stretch myself as a teacher and I can definitely learn to adjust. I also need to learn how to tell the difference between goofing around noise and the sound of good productive math conversations. Also, the room getting loud was a really good indication that it was time to move on to the next problem.
I think I need to spend some time teaching students what good coaching looks like, but I am doing this activity again for sure.
How Can We Improve Math Test Review?
I started using task cards when I was student teaching. Back then I didn’t call them task cards – I called them index cards. Basically, that’s what they were. I would write questions down on index cards, stick a card under each students desk, and that was that. When I discovered Teachers pay Teachers I started creating more colorful task cards.

Speed Dating Rules By: Kay Ireland Speed dating may sound silly to some, but in fact, it can be a successful way to meet new people and garner prospective dates. Discovery Health reports that over half of all participants find a potential match through speed dating see Reference section. If a venue near you is offering speed dating, consider it with an open mind and an understanding of the speed-dating rules.
The pace in speed dating still gives you time for a nice connection. Meet Singles in your Area! Procedures Speed dating almost always is conducted the same way, with a few variations on the placement of the daters, the time limit and so forth. In most cases, the women sit and remain seated for the duration of the speed-dating event. When a bell or other noise sounds, the men each sit across from a woman of their choice.
The couples then have a set amount of time to converse with each other. True to its name, speed dating usually only allows about three to five minutes per “date,” so that everyone in the room is allowed an opportunity to mingle. When the bell sounds again, the men get up and move to their right to start a new “date. On this scorecard, participants are to score or rate each of their dates for future reference. This is important, since you may meet up to twenty people in one night and may not remember the name of the person you liked the best.

This morning as I was perusing her latest posts, I read her post about speed dating as a way to mix up independent practice. I read her blog post at 8: I scrambled to pull things together, I didn’t do other things I was supposed to do, but I avoided a boring class. Here are the cards I hand wrote answers on the back on one set.
Students were invested in their problems. I started the lesson by talking about how speed dating is an efficient way for people looking for that special someone to have better odds at finding a match.

Chat Stations Basic Structure: Stations or posters are set up around the classroom, on the walls or on tables. Small groups of students travel from station to station together, performing some kind of task or responding to a prompt, either of which will result in a conversation. Before I knew the term Gallery Walk, I shared a strategy similar to it called Chat Stations , where the teacher prepares discussion prompts or content-related tasks and sets them up around the room for students to visit in small groups.

Speed dating, icebreakers and PowerPoint Posted on by Elisabeth Horn A couple of months ago my son, who lives in Stockholm, Sweden, at the moment, sent me a card game upon request, Icebreaker. I had read about it, gotten curious and thought it might come in handy in the classroom at some point. The game is simple enough, each player takes a card and has to answer the question on that particular card. The questions are bilingual — Swedish and English — and the ultimate goal of the game is to get to know your co-players better.
But I could use the idea and the cards as inspiration.

Overall, I think the results have been positive. Logically, working on formative assessment has led me to question some of my summative assessment practices too. To review or not review? To begin with, I am not sure I know the best way to prepare students for a test. At times, I feel like the valuable classroom minutes I spend reviewing for our class tests are mostly wasted. In fact, a fellow math teacher at my school has decided against spending a day on test review in favor of using those extra days to get to more new material.
My students completed what I call a gallery walk. There were math problems posted on chart paper around the room that I taped on my whiteboards. Students were put in groups of three, and they walked around the room and worked through each problem together. Students actually worked the problems on the whiteboard and then erased their work before they rotated to the next problem. I provided students with paper and clipboards if they wanted to make notes along the way.
As the students worked the problems, I walked around the room observing and providing hints and suggestions.

I had a double period to fill, and I had just read about it, and it seemed like it would be fun. I had no idea it would be such a productive use of time! I had students actively engaged in evaluating exponential expressions not the most thrilling standard for over forty-five minutes! I was blown away! Here are my top 4 reasons why Math Speed Dating is the perfect cooperative learning activity. Math Speed Dating increases engagement. The activity itself makes students interact with different classmates but for a short enough time so that it never gets too awkward and they never have enough time to start goofing off.
Each time students switch partners, they work on a new math problem, so accountability is high to learn the skill. Math Speed Dating builds confidence. When the activity begins, students receive the same problem that their partners across from them receive. Students get practice explaining that same problem over and over, and each time their confidence grows a little higher.
Students want to learn the content. Yes, even if the content is exponential expressions!
